Bringing farming families & live stock to visit the elderly.
POWAY, CA (North San Diego County) – August 15, 2009 – Sunshine Care Homes’ front
parking lot was transformed into a State Fair with the help of local
Ramona, Poway and Lakeside 4-H families who brought their live
stock, crafts and other fair goodies. Volunteer families and their
animals showed up as earlier as 10:00 a.m. to set-up fencing, shade
and more for the 2:30 p.m. event.
Visiting families brought horses, a dairy heifer, goats, lambs, rabbits,
chickens, a turkey and a miniature pot-bellied pig. The festivities
included petting and feeding the animals, pie and watermelon eating,
games and contests, face painting, an arts and crafts zone and animal
presentations.
Future intergenerational activities at Sunshine Care will include
(but are not limited to): Intergenerational Garden Club at our green
house and organic fields, “Sunshine Readers” (a story hour), an Easter
Egg Coloring Party, Dance Recitals by Dance Magic of Poway and
The Great Friendship Link—a one hour per week intergenerational
partnership with St. Michael’s Catholic School of Poway
An opportunity to volunteer and make a presentation
Many of today’s kids grow-up with grandparents who live far away. Sunshine Care’s Intergenerational programming allows kids the
chance to learn from and respect their elders. At the same time, they learn the importance of giving back to the community. At the State Fair, the children practiced their
presentation skills as they spoke to the crowd about their animal and how they care for it. There
was even milking demonstrations.
FOR THE SENIORS:
Time at the Fair, Time with Animals & Children
Sunshine Care Activity Director Lisa Lipsey notes, “Sunshine Care’s Residents are the ‘Great-Grandparent’ generation to today’s kids. Many of them grew-up on farms. Others raised a farm
animal or had chickens. It is very difficult for us to get around a big fairground, so why not bring the
fair to us? Summertime at the fair holds precious memories. Plus, it is so important to feel like you
have a place in our greater community.”
