Breakfast with Santa: A Give-Take-Give!

Christmas is alive and well! On Saturday, December 12th from 9 -11 a.m., Santa Claus made a special appearance at Sunshine Care Homes; bringing love and cheer to seniors and children alike. The event, Breakfast with Santa included volunteer families and children from Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church and five Poway area Girl Scout Troops.

Ongoing Festivities included: enjoying a continental breakfast with Sunshine Care’s Residents, hot cocoa, teas and juice, photos with Santa and three craft stations. At one craft station children made gingerbread house frames for their Santa photo. At another they were asked to pull the name of a Sunshine Care Resident out of Santa’s hat and create a greeting card for that person. The cards will be delivered Christmas Morning.

At 10:00 all of the Girl Scouts formed a choir and encouraged the audience to sing along with them.

The event was free, but Sunshine Care asked guests to bring non-perishable food donations for North County Interfaith’s Food Pantry. The food drive ends Tuesday, Dec. 15th.

“I like to measure success in terms of building community. The interactions between young and old. At Breakfast with Santa there was this wonderful happiness,” recalls Lisa Lipsey, Sunshine Care Homes Activity Director, “The children were excellent about giving the Grandmas and Grandpas they met a hug, handshake or high-five. The Girl Scout Choir was a special treat and sending families home with Santa pictures as a thank you gift felt great. Plus, we all worked together to bring food to needy families. It started weeks ago when Mrs. Wiegele’s third grade class at St. Michael’s Catholic School worked with our Residents to make the food donation boxes.”
