Poway, CA — April 21, 2011—Sunshine Care Homes' front parking lot was transformed into "Spring at the Farm" with the help of Poway 4-H who brought their newborn live stock, games, pies, BBQ and more! Volunteer families and their animals show up as earlier as 10:00 a.m. to set-up fencing, shade and more for the 2:00 p.m. event.
Visiting families will bring horses, goats, lambs, rabbits, farm dogs and more! The festivities included petting and feeding the animals, pie and BBQ, games and contests, face painting, animal demonstrations and talks and a live stage with entertainment showcasing youth talents from singing to musical instruments. High resolution photos available!
Future intergenerational/Community activities at Sunshine Care will include (but are not limited to): Intergenerational Garden Club at our green house and organic fields, a Dog Show on Saturday, May 28th. Dance Recitals by Dance Magic of Poway and The Great Friendship Link—a one hour per week intergenerational partnership with St. Michael’s Catholic School of Poway.
FOR THE KIDS:
An opportunity to volunteer and make a presentation
Many of today’s kids grow-up with grandparents who live far away. Sunshine Care’s Intergenerational programming allows kids the chance to learn from and respect their elders. At the same time, they learn the importance of giving back to the community. At the Festival, the children practiced their presentation skills as they spoke to the crowd about their animal and how they care for it. There was even goat milking demonstrations.
FOR THE SENIORS:
Time on the Farm, Time with Animals & Children
Sunshine Care’s Director of Community Relations, Lisa Lipsey, notes, “Sunshine Care’s Residents are the ‘Great-Grandparent’ generation to today’s kids. Many of them grew-up on farms. Others raised farm animals or had chickens. Some had children in 4-H. Spring time on the farm, with the birth of all the baby animals holds precious memories. But It is very difficult for us to get around a big farm, so why not bring the farm to us? It is so important to feel a part of life and a part of our greater community. There’s a special feeling in the air when a group like Poway 4-H takes the time to partner with us for a day and each person has the spirit of service and welcomes our Residents. ”
